Gender Differences in the Development and Progression of the Destructive Periodontal Disease
Dr. Mark Reynolds

Dr. Mark Reynolds, Chair, and Director of Postgraduate Periodontics, of the University of Maryland BCDS, will discuss the landmark study that examined evidence for a biologic basis for a sexual dimorphism, or the differences in susceptibility, to periodontal disease between men and women. In his findings, he and his research team concluded that sex steroids exert effects on multiple ways on the immune system regulation of inflammation. They also concluded that the root of the difference may be genetic.

Osteoporosis: Keeping Your Bones in Balance
Dr. Sharon C. Siegel

The Surgeon General recently published an exhaustive report on "Bone Health and Osteoporosis,” describing how osteoporosis affects millions in this country. Women are preferentially affected but men and adolescents are being diagnosed in increasing numbers. Learn if you or your patients could be at risk for osteoporosis, how to prevent osteoporosis and the dental/oral health implications. Discover how the dentist may one day be the key diagnostician for osteoporosis. Balance training is a key element in protecting yourself and your patients from devastating falls. 1. Define osteoporosis and how it affects both men and women.2. Understand the three major contributing factors to good bone health.3. Discuss and understand screening tests and drugs used for osteoporosis.4. Understand how dental radiography may be a critical screening tool for osteoporosis.5. Discuss the literature evidence base of the effects of osteoporosis and oral health.6. Discuss the etiology and prevention of "Bisphosphonate Associate Osteonecrosis/BON” or "Osteonecrosis of the Jaws/ONJ”.7. Learn exercises to do balance training to prevent falls as you get older.

Sharon C. Siegel, D.D.S., M.S. is Chair and Professor in the Section of Prosthodontics at the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, and an Associate member of the Graduate Faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Siegel holds a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology and a certificate in Prosthodontics. She is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, a Fellow of the American and International College of Dentists and she is a 2006 Fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute. She has lectured internationally, has conducted research and published extensively in the field of dental cutting. She an Associate Editor on the Clinical Reports for the Journal of Prosthodontics. She holds a patent on a dental device. She has lectured about and is passionate about improving Women’s Heath and Women’s Health Issues.

Managing Older Adults in Your Practice
Dr. Janet Yellowitz

Dr. Janet Yellowitz is the director of Geriatric Dental Programs at the University of Maryland Dental School. She was the president of the Special Care Dentistry Association (2008-2009), and the past-president of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry (ASGD). 

Older adult dental patients are a unique, heterogeneous group of individuals, often presenting with complex medical and cognitive conditions. Providing care to older adults can be easily facilitated with appropriate knowledge and skills. Key topics will include approaches to optimally address: age-related physical changes, recognizing and working with those with cognitive impairments and ensuring good quality care to older adults.The participant will be able to:Identify easy techniques to improve the outcome of an older adults' dental visit. Identify the impact of age-related physical and cognitive changes to older adults' perception of oral health. Identify ways to recognize signs and symptoms of cognitive loss. Identify management and treatment modalities when treating adults with cognitive changes. Discuss approaches to ensure improved oral health to future elderly dental patients.

She is also the founder of "Failure No Option", a small business mentoring program designed to coach new entrepreneurs on the steps to creating a strong foundation for their start up business. She lives in Kentucky with her husband, two children, and the sweetest dog in the world.
