Just 35 miles north of Downtown San Diego, the beautiful La Costa Resort and Spa is the meeting spot for this weekend of WEALTH – (Wisdom, Excellence, Achievement, Leadership, Team-Building and Health) for Women Dentists, their staff members and their families.

We have a great program in store for you, from keynote speaker Dr. Cherilyn Sheets, to a dental assisting track for your staff, to the latest information on emergency protocols for your patients, to wellness and nutrition to help keep your mind and spirit healthy - we have you covered. Whether this is your first time experiencing an AAWD Annual Meeting or you’ve been coming for years, this is going to be a great experience.

Hands-On Class at the Zimmer Institute



7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Zimmer will provide transportation from La Costa on Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. and take you to the Zimmer Dental Institute where you will receive a hands-on course on the latest restorative techniques; Impression techniques, abutment selections, temporary fabrication, over denture abutment placement and cap pickup.  

Dr. Amy Ridall will present the hands-on lecture.  Dr. Ridall was raised in Elmira, New York. She graduated from State University of New York at Albany with a B.S. degree and then attended State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. After receiving her DDS degree from Buffalo, she entered a 2 year program in Oral Sciences and received an MS degree from the same institution. She continued her training at the University of Alabama Birmingham as a post-doctoral fellow for one year, during which she conducted research on mechanisms of mineralization in bone. She continued her dental and science training at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where she was awarded an Individual Dentist Scientist Award from the NIDCR, entering into a PhD program at Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a Prosthodontic Residency program at the Dental Branch. She received a Certificate in Prosthodontics and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology in 1995. She has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at UTDB since 1995 and developed the Undergraduate Implant Curriculum. She now serves as the Coordinator of Implant Programs. She also maintains a part-time private practice in Houston, TX.

GROWING YOUR PRACTICE: The Roles of Economics, Medicine, Environment, Competence and Street Smarts

In the years of recession, the dental trade continues to increase, but many dental practices do not, and the search is on for ways to survive and grow in slow economic times. New practice techniques, expansion of services, fewer referrals out, and new practice models have sprung up everywhere. With it comes the attendant emergencies, overextension of skills, planning failures, and legal issues. This lecture will explore the ways you change your approach for sustained success, and includes prevention and cures for practice slow down, showing you the pitfalls, medical emergencies, and legal dilemmas,  and how to avoid them.

Cherilyn Sheets, DDS 
"Keys to Building WEALTH"

 Key elements that synergistically create W.E.A.L.T.H. will be highlighted with personal illustrations shared from the speaker’s own professional career. Technology that enhances clinical quality and restorative excellence,  pathways to career advancement, steps to develop leadership skills, the relationship of  team-building to creating a positive culture of achievement, and the critical role of maintaining your own professional health will all  be covered.  A fun, personal and practical look at what is important in a restorative practice combined with common sense lessons for  professional female advancement strategies.

Dr. Cherilyn Sheets maintains a full-time private practice in Newport Beach, California, with a special emphasis on esthetic rehabilitative dentistry and implants. She is an educator, clinician, author and lecturer, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Sheets is Co-Executive Director of the Newport Coast Oral Facial Institute, an international non-profit teaching and research center, considered to be one of the finest microsurgical training centers in the world. She is also a Clinical Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the USC Ostrow School of Dentistry and is on their Board of Councilors.

Dr. Sheets is a Past President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the American Association of Women Dentists.  Dr. Sheets is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Equilibration Society, the Pacific Coast Society of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Osseointegration. She is also a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry.  She received the 2002 Gordon Christensen Award for Excellence in Lecturing, the 2004 USC School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year Award, the 2006 Section Honor Award (Distinguished Dentist Award) from the California Section of the Pierre Fauchard International Honor Dental Academy, and the 2008 Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund Award. Dr. Sheets serves on numerous editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals.  She is also the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Children’s Dental Center in Inglewood, California, which is a non-profit prototype dental center for providing multidisciplinary care to children of the working poor.  She is also the Founding Chairman of the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation.

Team Track"  Five Points to Leading a Great Team to Winning Results

 Anita L. Weir is the office manager for the Dentistry for Children & Adolescents in their Creve Coeur and St. Charles, MO offices.  Weir obtained her associates degree in business from Fontbonne University and has more than 18 years of experience in the dental profession as a chair-side assistant, office administrator, dental trainer/coach and speaker. 

Since joining the Dentistry for Children & Adolescents in 1995, she has trained a team of 20 or more assistants and has shared her enthusiasm for dentistry.  Using her hands on experience, she has empowered team members to meet and exceed their goals through clinical workflows and streamlining processes for both the front and back office.

Cissy Furusho, DDS 
An Introduction to Oromyofunctional Therapy

1:00 - 1:30 p.m.

What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?  Who could benefit from OMFT? Who do you refer to for OMFT treatment?  This class will give you a peek into what orofacialmyofunctional therapy is and provide answers to the above questions.  Be prepared to wag your tongue!

Dr. Cissy K. Furusho received her B.S. in biology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and graduated with her D.D.S., her pediatric certificate, and her masters in oral biology from UIC College of Dentistry. She holds a certificate in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. She is highly involved in the American Association of Women Dentist and is also very active as a member in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the Chicago Dental Society. Dr. Furusho is also a clinical instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry. She enjoys riding her bicycle and loves to bake and spend time with her family.

Dr. Jermaine Ware is a Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner (CCWP) for children and adults. His unique approach focuses on helping people find balance in the key areas of health. Dr. Ware is the founder of HEROH Chiropractic Lifestyle Center in Nashville TN.  He is also a co-founder of Warehouse Fitness (Friendswood TX) and the author of two books (Release penciled in for June 8th)

This fabulous day will be capped off by our wine and cheese reception with the sponsors, followed by our Annual Meeting & Awards dinner.  During the AAWD’s annual meeting, attendees will vote on the slate of officers for 2014, meet the recipient of the 2013 Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award and hear an update from our 2012 P&G/Gillette Hayden Memorial Fund Research Award.

Sheri Doniger, DDS 
Healthy Team Management

 Navigating the intricacies of women managing a team of women is not always simple.  Just as we strive to have healthy balance in our professional and personal lives, we need to have a balance in our office to be able to give our patients outstanding care.  The presentation will be light and motivational, as we are discussing "team” dynamics rather than "staff” diseases.

Sheri B. Doniger, DDS is a leading dental clinician, author, educator, and consultant who currently practices dentistry in Lincolnwood, IL. Dr. Doniger has authored numerous articles on topics ranging from periodontal disease to effective communications, and has presented many lectures with an ongoing focus on women in the dental industry.  She is also an active member of numerous professional societies, including the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, and the American Association of Women Dentists, as well as being a Fellow in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

Dr. Doniger currently serves as the Vice President of the American Association of Women Dentist and is the current editor of the AAWD’s online newsletter, the Chronicle.  She was the editor of Woman Dentist Dental Journal and currently writes a regular column for DrBiCuspid.com entitled "Dental Diaries".  A health and wellness advocate, Dr. Doniger is always looking for ways to make life more productive,  In 2011 she was named one of the Top Twenty-Five Women in Dentistry according to Dental Practice Report.

This interactive presentation will educate Dental offices on the most effective ways to market themselves online using a variety of Social Media sites.  We will explore platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, YouTube, and more. Leveraging the power of Internet commercials, Yelp and Blogs will also be covered. Coupled with a solid strategy and tenacious execution, Social Media is a game-changer for Dental offices. 

Participants will learn how to maintain an online conversation that is fresh, relevant and targeted for the right audience. They will understand what type of content works for different Social Media sites and how to leverage them. The key is to have a personality online, yet remain professional at all times. Representing the unique personality of your office is key to standing out online.
