The American Association of Women Dentists is pleased to announce Dr. Cherilyn G. Sheets, DDS, as recipient of the 2012 Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award. The Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award is AAWD’s highest honor, and recognizes significant service to dentistry on the basis of achievement in civic, cultural, humanitarian and academic areas. It honors women who promote a positive image for women in dentistry and those who help to advance AAWD’s mission to be the recognized resource for connecting and enriching lives of women dentists.
As stated by AAWD President Dr. Jennifer Cornell, "Dr. Sheets contributions to dentistry as well as to AAWD speak for themselves and we are proud to name her as a recipient of AAWD's highest honor.”
Dr. Cherilyn Sheets maintains a full-time private practice in Newport Beach, California, with a special emphasis on esthetic rehabilitative dentistry and implants. She is an educator, clinician, author and lecturer, both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Sheets is Co-Executive Director of the Newport Coast Oral Facial Institute, an international non-profit teaching and research center, considered to be one of the finest microsurgical training centers in the world. She is also a Clinical Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the USC Ostrow School of Dentistry and is on their Board of Councilors. In partnership with the University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Engineering, Dr. Sheets and James C. Earthman, Ph.D. are leading an ongoing research project involving energy dissipation in natural teeth and dental implants. They own 3 patents on a medical device that measures the osseointegration of dental implants and detects cracks in teeth and restorations.
Dr. Sheets is a Past President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the American Association of Women Dentists. Dr. Sheets is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Equilibration Society, the Pacific Coast Society of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Osseointegration. She is also a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry. She received the 2002 Gordon Christensen Award for Excellence in Lecturing, the 2004 USC School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year Award, the 2006 Section Honor Award (Distinguished Dentist Award) from the California Section of the Pierre Fauchard International Honor Dental Academy, and the 2008 Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund Award.
Dr. Sheets serves on numerous editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals. She is also the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Children’s Dental Center in Inglewood, California, which is a non-profit prototype dental center for providing multidisciplinary care to children of the working poor. She is also the Founding Chairman of the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation.
Dr. Sheets will be honored during AAWD’s 91st Annual Meeting & Conference, Knowledge is Power, June 28-30, 2012, and Dr. Sheets will be presented with her award on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in San Francisco, CA during the 2013 AAWD Board Installation Dinner.
